Treasure Coast Music Teachers Association Recognizes Helping People Succeed

Besides the popular Music-Thon program, the Treasure Coast Music Teachers Association, with support from its performing students, selected Helping People Succeed as its annual designated charity, presenting a $4,000 donation to the non-profit. The association supported non-profit and individual students collected funds from family and friends.

Helping People Succeed is a 501(c)3 non-profit that serves more than 4,500 families in Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties. Among its many services are working with students with autism spectrum disorder, helping families with newborns to five years old, presenting its Music & Movement program and finding employment for adults with disabilities. Helping People Succeed is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in Martin County.

Liz Quirantes, WPEC-CBS Channel 12 award-winning news anchor, served as the Music-Thon Honorary Chair. Passionate about supporting causes for children, Quirantes was awarded the "Media Advocate Award" from Florida's Children First for her work raising awareness of foster care and adoption. She is also an advocate for education and has hosted the annual William T. Dwyer Awards for Excellence in Education since 2002, working closely with the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County.

“Celebrity Emcees” introduced the young performers and included: Sandee Ragl, a retired nurse practitioner, Girl Scout leader, community volunteer and secretary on the Board of Directors of Helping People Succeed; Ashley Jacobson, a Lyric soprano, 2008 Miss North Dakota, and winner of Miss Congeniality in the 2008 Miss America Pageant; Elizabeth Jekanowski, a 2011 Martin County School District Teacher of the Year and Elementary Teacher of the Year, and currently coordinator of Exceptional Student Education at Anderson Middle School; and Mark Brechbill, CPA, past president of Stuart Main Street, supporter for Rockin’ Riverwalk, Dancin’ in the Streets, Hobgoblins on Main Street and the Howard Allen Art Show. He has also served as a board member for Helping People Succeed.

Participating TCMTA teachers were Billy Borovina, Shazkya Fernandez, Lynn Haynes, Cindy Kessler, Sarah Miller, Marianne Mills, Sandra Palter, Maribel Soriano, and Rita Vallis.

Kathi Kretzer of Kretzer Piano donated the Yamaha grand piano. Mike Hayden of D.C. Moore & Son Piano Moving provided the transportation of the grand piano. Sean Carroll, Director of Marketing and Business Development at the Treasure Coast Square Mall extended gracious accommodations, while John Eriksen furnished the sound system and photography. Glenna Parris, Suzy Hutcheson, and Jackie Holfelder of Helping People Succeed were on hand throughout the day to lend support. A very special thank you to all of the enthusiastic and talented students who made the benefit successful – Children Helping Children!
